Yay more Radio Lab fans! There’s an episode where they talk about how fireflies in large groups flash their lights in sequence and nobody knows how they synchronize that. They have this guy who was one of the first people to observe it describing seeing this happen and Radio Lab puts in this sound effect that you know is supposed to be fireflies’ lights blinking on and off but you ALSO know that that’s not what it really sounds like. But without it, the story isn’t as visual somehow.

Currently I understand that every artistic deviance may cause the listener to loose some trust, but I believe they can gain some back through understanding and especially excitement when the piece becomes more engaging. You could say it’s manipulation, but it all depends. Reinterpreting a reality can be done creatively, and with sound effects can often be arguably more effective.
