A rainy Monday afternoon gives me the perfect time to reflect on the past five weeks of Salt.

I’ve made progress on four stories so far, but every hour I’m not shooting leaves me with an anxious feeling that I’m not doing enough. My brain is frequently racing with other possible story ideas. I’m locked into my stories for the most part, but I’m keeping myself open for something amazing that may come about. It’s been a real learning experience watching stories begin from mere hunches and google searches to actual narratives. My peers and teachers at Salt have been priceless, giving me support and advice, I’m constantly learning from them.

One of the biggest challenges of these first few week has been access. Not that I’ve been limited to the amount of access I have, but getting to that point where people speak and behave naturally as I’m photographing. Good documentary photos take time and patience, not exactly two things I think I have a lot of being at Salt. I’m in the “show and tell” stage of my story where my characters feel the need to entertain me when I’m with them. No worries though, it’s only a phase. Other than that I’ve really enjoyed the people I’ve met and photographed, the relationships formed when your a documentarian really are special.

Working in the field with a radio or writing collaborator has been beneficial to the perspective and voice that our stories will have. The time spent together driving and discussing our story has given us a chance to talk about what direction we’re taking. Other than having to shoot around their ever persistent microphone, I’ve enjoyed working with Zach and Emily.

The next few weeks will give me the chance to learn from the images and audio we’ve collected so far and keep me on my toes for those storytelling images. The weeks have been flying by at a dizzying speed, so making the most of everyday is crucial.

Dear Otto’s Mashed potato and bacon pizza, you are my first Salt crush. I know you are not a “character,” but your soulful and satisfying bites make you hard to resist. You’re priceless, even though you came into my life with a free coupon.

On the other hand, as I sat typing this blog entry, out my third floor window I noticed a black VW Jetta getting a parking ticket. The owner of the car came around the block shouting, “Please don’t ticket me, I just parked there!” The man issuing the parking ticket pretended not to hear and slipped the ticket under her windshield wiper. Last nights, 11-7 a.m. parking ban on my street left me clueless. I woke up this morning with a ticket on my car, though I was sure I had moved my car to a safe location. I’ll soon understand the parking system in this town, maybe even by week 15.

Really though, what has been the most amazing thing to happen to me in the last 24 hours has been the sense of urgency to get started on my stories. I spent so much time researching Maine from a distance it’s great to be actually here. Hopefully all my emails and calls will be returned with a bounty of story ideas…
