A couple of weeks ago, when I should’ve been feverishly working on my first story but couldn’t handle any more without some sort of unpleasant brain implosion, I gave a call to Catie Talarski, a Salt radio alum from 2005, to see how things have been going since her semester here. She is now a senior producer for a morning news talk show called “Where We Live” on Connecticut Public Radio.

For the past two days, all of Salt got together in the Red Room for a critique session of every single person’s story. Having 35 people giving you their opinions about your piece is kind of scary, but so so helpful–it was a pretty unique experience to be able to carve out time for everyone [...]

Man, do I love Radio Lab. Every time I listen to it, I get really excited and daunted at the same time because of the power of radio to take something really complex and make it interesting and even funny. It makes me love AND understand science, words which would never have escaped my lips [...]

… I could take some lessons from this kid.
What’s more nerve-wracking: interviewing the President, or going up to random people on the street with a microphone and try to get them to answer personal questions?
We got the shpiel (schpiel? szchpiel? shpeel?) in the first few days of the semester about how the process of documenting someone else’s life/experience can feel like dating–I didn’t quite get it then, but the nerves, the awkwardness, anxiety about rejection, and the fear of picking up the phone in case I’m being too needy are all here in plentiful supply now.

Headed out to harass strangers with a microphone last weekend for our vox pop assignment, and really surprised myself at how much fun I had. This might have been the high point of the day—makes me feel all kinds of romantic.
