the end!! // the beginning?!

December 30th, 2009 by Caitlin Leave a reply »

The end of the semester at Salt is kind of a weird time…it seems to come all of a sudden, and then the mad dash to finish editing writing and photos and audio turns into the almost-forgotten feeling of nothing to do as we stand around at the beginning of the final gallery opening, wondering if anyone will show up.

…they did!

The opening was a really good time — having family, friends, and especially our subjects see and hear what we’d been working on was scary but ended up being great. After spending so much of the semester lugging around audio equipment , I wished I could’ve had it that night so I could live the whole thing over again.

Stay tuned for more from Salt Spring 2010!

the saltcast…NOT!

Salt graduation happens the day after the final gallery opening. I can’t tell you exactly what it entails (top secret!), except that each track gets five minutes to represent themselves. This semester, the radio track went all out with a parody of the Saltcast…I wish I could take credit, but the truth is I was tweaking my stories until the last second and didn’t do much to help put this little piece of brilliance together.

But I sure do like it! I’ll never look at a bathtub full of pudding the same way again.

(If you’re wondering about the REAL Saltcast that inspired this take-off, you can find it HERE)

the aftermath

It’s been almost two weeks now, and it’s still kind of hard to believe there’ll be no more late nights (or all nights!) at Salt, no more radio class/support group, no more trolling frantically through all the local papers for stories…well, I can still do that, but it will be a little while before I save up enough money to get my own recording gear!

It feels funny to be plopped back into the world after such an intensive four months, but I also feel like I’m right on the edge of something. The future’s looking good for our class at Salt-there’s talk of starting collectives to keep us producing, and pitching stories to stations and magazines. People are off to New York, Boston, California, and all over the place, and others of us (like me) are hooked on Portland and staying here for a while to see what happens next.
